John Rolph (d.1862), Margaret Rolph (d. 1869) and Sara Rolph (d. 1873)

John Frederick Rolph died 2nd April 1862 aged 38. Margaret Kerr Rolph died 10th March 1869 aged 45. Sara Louisa their daughter died 21st December 1873 aged 16.

John Frederick was born 23 Apr 1823 to Jeremiah and Sarah at Great Gaddesden.  He married Margaret Kerr Ludlow at Hemel Hempstead 25 Jun 1849. She was Canadian, born in Quebec.  They had at least four children – John Frederick b. 26 April 1850, Edward (b. 1855) Sarah, b. 1858 and buried here, and Charles, b. 1859.

John Frederick was a draper. In 1857 he advertised for an ‘apprentice to the drapery business’ and by 1861 was well-established in the town employing 1 man and 2 boys., and with two female domestic servants.

After his wife died, his ‘furniture, glass, linen and valuable effects were sold by Auction at the Berkhamsted Corn Exchange on the 29th August 1871. (Bucks Herald 19 Aug 1871

Their children were thus orphaned at a young age. In 1871 Sarah Louisa Rolph was living as a niece at Edlesborough with Joseph Chennells aged 65, Farmer of 600 acres and employing 25 men & 8 boys, and wife Ann J, aged 57 both born at Great Gaddesden,. She died on 21st December 1873 aged 16.

The headstone for Plot 105 records two further Rolph family members – The wife of John Frederick (junr) (1848-1874) and Frank Everard her son born 22nd October 1873 died 25th October 1873.  In 1878, John Frederick Rolph junior re-married, this time to Hannah Kellaway of Dorchester at St George’s Church Fordington.  This was one of 19 memorials restored in 2018.
