HERITAGE OPEN DAY ‘Let It R.I.P’
9th September 2018 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Let It RIP. Come and discover our 3 acres of memorials with beautiful works of art, how they were crafted, the unusual stories behind them. There is something for everyone, carve inscriptions, explore trails, enjoy playlets and songs or the peace.
Why do we commemorate people and what do we wish to remember? In Rectory Lane Cemetery our memorials provide some clues and understanding them shines light on many facets of our Art, History and Scientific thought.
Come and explore how maths and physics are used to manage this space. Try your hand at building a stable archway from bricks. What types of stone are suitable? What do the symbols mean and what artistic and design skill do they display? How did fashions in Memorials change
Guided tours will introduce visitors to the Cemetery’s history and the fascinating stories behind some of the Memorials. Learn about Masonry and conservation work. Consider what you would like to be remembered for and what your ‘tweet for eternity’ would be or have a go at carving it!
Follow the five self-guided trails or relax and listen to verse, prose and song repeated at various times during the day. Fun activities for little ones include story-telling, modelling a memorial in clay, or meeting some of the characters commemorated.
This year we have a focus on the Remarkable Women of the town. Come and discover unsung heroines who came from all walks of life including; the founder of this space a Countess, a local Innkeeper who befriended exiled French Royalty and visited Versailles, a patron of Education for the poor, a breeder of livestock and an actor familiar to many Archers listeners.
