Heritage Open Days: Afternoon tea with the Countess of Bridgewater
The Countess of Bridgewater invites you to discover more about the establishment of the Cemetery and some of her contemporaries buried there, followed by a revitalising cup of tea!
When the churchyard around St Peter’s was full to bursting, something had to be done.. Wealthy benefactor and chatelaine of Ashridge House, Charlotte Catherine Countess of Bridgewater (1763—1849) came to the rescue and donated the land for the Rectory Lane Cemetery to the town in 1842.
If it had not been for her generosity, we would not have Rectory Lane Cemetery, the detached churchyard to St Peter’s at all.
