Heritage Open Days: Stone Memorial Restoration

Learn about the challenges and joys of a stonemason’s craft from Will Yendell, Rectory Lane Cemetery’s resident stonemason. Understand the techniques used to conserve memorials and see a live demonstration of the art.

Will Yendell gave up his thriving job as an electrician to follow his passion for heritage stonemasonry. He worked alongside Messenger Conservation as they repaired nineteen memorials in the first year of the Lottery Funded project, including undertaking the recutting of the inscription on the Cemetery’s Memorial Arch.

Currently he combines studying for his Level 3 Bankers Mason Course with Heritage Skills at Stratford Crafts College with conservation commissions at the Cemetery, increasingly from families with relatives buried there, impressed by the transformation taking place and delighted to have the opportunity to ‘put their memorials right’.
