Great progress has been made on the Rectory Lane Cemetery Project’s landscaping works. However, this spring has seen the unexpected challenge of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, and this has meant that the project team have had to suspend landscaping work for the time being.
This is a great disappointment as the team were making such progress in this better weather. Paths have been laid in the lower cemetery but the grass needs to come back to complete the picture. The Garden of Remembrance is almost finished, but is awaiting its planting. The team will be back to complete the transformation as soon as possible.
Unfortunately this means that the Cemetery remains closed to the public, precisely at a time when it could have been a great resource for socially-distanced exercise, for people to walk to from their houses and enjoy the calm green space. It has also meant cancelling all the events we had scheduled for the first half of this year in line with government instructions. All these events will take place, possibly later in the year, but more likely, will be postponed till the same time next year. The National Federation of Cemetery Friends decided to have a virtual AGM this year, so we will not have the opportunity to host them, unfortunately.
